Advanced 3D JET Wind Converter Technology

Advancements in wind turbine technology have been growing rapidly. In the shadows of multi-megawatt wind turbines is another growing sector within this industry: residential wind. Improved airfoil designs for maximum efficiency at low wind speed, high efficiency direct drive permanent magnet alternators, improved governing methods and highly sophisticated controls and inverters now allow home owners to interface directly with utility companies or design off-grid systems. These systems are increasing energy independence, competing with current energy prices and reducing environmental impacts.

One important consideration in designing a wind turbine is matching the tip speed ratio (TSR) of the airfoils to the alternator/generator. The TSR is the speed of the tip of the airfoil relative to the velocity of the wind. Although having a high TSR might be advantageous in keeping airfoil cost down due to the requirement of thinner blades as well as the need for a smaller alternator due to a higher rpm rotor, this usually results in machines with shorter life cycles and noisier airfoils. Designing wind turbines with low TSR means that chord width of the airfoil can be increased making them more efficient at low wind speeds and lower rpm resulting in a quiet, longer lasting turbine. This aids in maximizing low wind start-up speed and increases energy production at the low end of the power production curve. The new invented JET blade turbine design increased turbine performance at low wind speed and the turbine capacity factor. The new patented JET wind energy converter is called to answer the problems caused by low efficiency and high investment costs of the conventional wind power facilities.

In addition to new blade design, alternators have also been advancing in their efficiency and capabilities. Neodymium magnets are now being used in most every modern alternator design for small scale wind turbines. These high strength rare earth alloy magnets consist of neodymium, iron and boron (Nd2Fe14B) plus other doping ingredients to increase coercively and improve oxidation characteristics. These magnets are resistant to demagnetization, and have a much higher flux density than plastic, ceramic, or alnico magnets. This results in alternators with a higher flux density that can produce more power then an alternator of an equal size using Ferro or other magnets. Other improvements such as high quality laminate to reduce iron losses, tight air gap tolerances and low induction winding configurations to reduce cogging torque all add to increasing alternator efficiency

Controlling a wind turbine’s power output and rotor speed can be one of the largest challenges for designers and manufacturers. Without proper controls wind turbines are not able to achieve their maximum efficiency and run the risk of over speeding in high winds and damaging the equipment. Electronic controls load the alternator to keep the rotor at peak power for the wind speed unless the desired maximum power level has been exceeded. Controllers also enable as much power as possible to be put into the batteries, consistent with preserving battery life in battery charging systems. The power that exceeds available battery load will be diverted to a heat load, which can be a standard water-heating element allowing end users to utilize energy that would otherwise be dissipated as waste heat. Charge controls can be temperature compensated and have adjustable set points for extreme environments and custom charging capabilities. These controllers are using pulse-width modulation to control the amount of power sent to a diversion load.

Advanced control enables small wind turbines to interface directly with the utility grid without the use of a battery bank. Several inverters are now available to directly interface with a machine’s controller and synchronize with utility voltage and frequency with very little conversion losses. Both SMA and Magnetek have been on the leading edge of manufacturing high voltage inverters designed to interface with small wind turbines. This required inverter manufacturers to provide power control algorithms suitable for small wind generators. These grid connect inverters provide maximum power point tracking in a highly efficient battery-less system ideal for net metering applications. This enables consumers utilizing the utility grid to sell their excess energy back to the utility for the same price the utility charges their consumers. Combining several or all of these advancements in wind turbine technology can result in quieter, longer lasting and more efficient turbines. Implementing these technology advancements is not without it’s price.

The quantitative advantages of new invented JET turbines summarized below:

The JET blade improves energy capture at lower wind speeds. The JET design allows the blade to respond to turbulent gusts in a manner that lowers fatigue loads on the blade. By periphery JET blade channels each prop blade tip designed as not end blade. End less blade avoids tip blade energy losses. JET blades formed JET streams in opposite direction of the blade rotation. As a result respective JET forces augmented blade rotation. The centrifugal forces (by rotation) increased JETstream flows behind blade tips. It increases turbine efficiency several times at low wind speeds.

Tip blade arrangements by rotation formed virtual diffuser like structure around blade tips. It increases turbine efficiency by factor of 1.6 in average.

Tip blade arrangements reduced rotor efficiency at moderate to high wind speeds but it compensates by the virtual diffuser.

The cost of new invented wind turbine is up to 40% low than any sophisticated wind turbine with same capacity factor.

Over all result is 20 times more efficient prop at low wind speed. It is result is not because additional blade area only. It is well known that low area blades are not self starting at low wind speeds. In the same conditions new invented blade/prop operates very efficient by full load. The invented radical new JET technology of primer wind energy converters are applicable in both axial and cross flow wind generators.

The new invented JET turbine designed for operation at low wind speed and high turbulence. Under turbine rotor a pyramid like structure directed additional wind to rotor swept area. The ROTOJET designs solve two  main problems of the conventional propeller (lift and/or drag) turbine rotors by JET peripheral channels (or semi channel) of the blades. The JET channels have two functions:

The first one is to avoid the tip blade energy loses because of tip vortices,

The second function is much more significant. The second function is acceleration of the fluid current in the JET channel (or semi channel) and it?s directing towards the back of the correspondent blade, and thus the flowing current to create JET stream. In the opposite direction of the JET flow appears JET force/torque which considerably supports the rotation.

Because of the JET channels big part of the fluid pressure over the rotor is redirected into JET force and also due to the channels the inductive blade tip losses of energy are vastly decreased.

Owing to the mentioned above, the JET rotors (propeller or non-propeller) are about two and more times more efficient in comparison to the conventional rotors. Such JET turbines are described in the patent descriptions BG110 251/2008 and BG 110 340/2009

ROTOJET turbine designs generally increase both TSR and self starting ability that is very important in tidal operation. But TSR is non linear depending on the water/air speed. The speed of the wind, tidal stream is varying in very broad range. To find the best design of the Jet turbine in tidal stream have to now range of water speed changing, water density and water temperature changing. But much more important is the frequency distribution of the water/wind speed per day / year.

We have demonstrated that the power that can be extracted by a free flow Jet/Lift/Drag ROTOJET Hydro-Kinetic Turbine is significantly higher than the "Betz limit" which restricts the total extractable power for an unconfined turbine such as a wind turbine. The Betz analysis is widely applied to the free flow water streams, but it underestimates the turbine power output. The  Betz  limit not related to the JET assisted wind / hydrokinetic  turbines.

 

 

Advanced Tornado 3D Wind Converter Technology

 

New Designed 3D  horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) for Ultra Low Cut-in Wind Speed. You see on the display of wind speed meter (anemometer)that the wind speed as low as 0.7 m/s when turbine generates voltage - see the multimeter. We often see people post questions on forums, where they are looking for a wind turbine "with a low cut-in wind speed". Typically the cut-in wind speed is the wind speed where the turbine starts turning. Starton Engineering JSCo. provides technical and environmental services to progress the priority sites, including a feasibility study for a large site in mountainous and coastal regions. The viability of the site was known to be dependent on the realistic capacity of the wind farm, due to a major cost anticipated in relation to the required Starton Engineering JSCo. provided an initial estimate of potential wind farm capacity at the site, followed by an in-depth study, which determined the feasible number and location of turbines. This was achieved by investigating the technical and environmental constraints experienced at the site and by developing an appropriate wind farm design in response to the specific features of this site and surroundings.

Our team gave consideration to priority issues, including:

• Selection of suitable wind turbine type
• Researching site constraints including protected designations, dwellings planned land use and infrastructure such as gas pipelines and microwave links
• Optimisation of energy production based on wind data from a local Meteorological Station and 3 dimensional wind speed analysis
• Respecting local properties by assessing likely noise levels and currence of shadow flicker at occupied dwellings
• Understanding visual impact of the proposed project incorporating advice from our landscape architects regarding sensitive local viewpoints and landscape-rela
ted designations noted from the adopted Local Plan.
The project demonstrated our breadth of understanding of key issues at the early stage of a wind farm design and development:
• Appreciation that a proposed wind farm size and shape should be based on a realistically constrained scenario; this pragmatism was particularly
important for actively negotiating the lease agreement for the site, using our work as a guide to the available income from the site
• Given that visual impact is a crucial planning consideration for wind farms, we understand the benefit of input and advice from landscape architects at project inception. Starton Engineering JSCo incorporated aesthetic criteria when positioning turbines at the site, including the use of curved rows of turbines, thus avoiding straight unattractive grids
• The ability to balance technical and environmental concerns when proposing the feasible capacity of a wind farm site.
• Identification of priority further work including peat probing, vehicle access
study, consultation with signal operators (Radio communications operators), and landscape led design study.

Starton Engineering JSCo’s report presented findings and recommendations for the development of a realistically sized wind farm, which would provide high income.
