Self Charging Electric Battery Boats

The ROTOJET designs solve the problem of low efficiency of the conventional hydrokinetic turbines and jet water propulsion systems. The main advantage of both hydrokinetic turbines and water propulsion devices are high energy efficiency thanks to additional rotating jet force. Several radical new jet blade designs allow forming a jet stream behind the blade at normal direction to the rotor radius. In accordance to Newton's third law the reaction of every jet water stream is a collinear  jet force, but in opposite direction. The jet force increase rpm and rotor efficiency, as well. The action and the reaction are simultaneous. For new patented ROTOJET technology see here

Electric motors as main propulsion for boats are not new; in fact the very first propulsion for boats was electric, since it dates back to before the internal combustion engine (ICE).

New Invented Boat Electric Twin- Motors Thrust System ( ETMTS ) with hydrokinetic function in river / tidal streams

Props have typically been installed on shafts that were inclined downward by about 7° to 10° and made long enough to provide the necessary clearance between the top of the prop and the bottom of the hull (usually at least 15 percent of the prop diameter). The inclination angle causes a portion of the thrust developed by the prop to be directed downward rather than straight aft. The ring of water that rotates with the usually rather long exposed prop shaft creates a drag loss (the Magnus effect). Most significant, the inclination of the prop disc relative to the flow of water causes a "P-factor" effect, an imbalance in the thrust delivered by each semicircle of the prop disc that results from the difference in the relative angle of attack of the prop blades on the "downward" rotating side of the prop from the relative angle of attack of the blades on the "upward" side of the prop disc. ("P-factor" accounts for the turning effectthat is evident on virtually all single-screw vessels that use inclined prop shafts.)

ETMTS (Electric Twin-Engine Motors System) presented a very significant challenge to the status quo for recreational boat propulsion with the new patented electric drive. The ETMTS uses contra-rotating propellors, simultaneously gaining the advantage of reducing the boat's draft and recovering the swirl loss that occurs when large amounts of power are absorbed by relatively small propellors.

Precise, efficient maneuvering is one of the virtues of any drive that uses vectored thrust of ETMTS. The steering angle of the two drive units in the ETETS is controlled via the system's computer. In a turning maneuver the system commands the drive on the inside of the turn to move through a greater angle than that of the outboard drive, an action analogous to the way in which the front wheels of a car must move to provide proper, skid free tracking. The result is a significantly tighter turning radius, especially at high speeds. An optional joystick control is available for use in docking and other low-speed maneuvers.

Compared to a conventional angled prop shaft setup, the TMTS (not electric motors) drive has demonstrated a maximum speed by TMTS advantage of approximately 7 percent and an acceleration time advantage of about 13 percent when installed in identical planning hulls using identical engines. A fuel economy advantage that can reach 30 percent is probably of even greater interest. The engine exhaust flows through the drive pod and is injected into the water at the center of the prop wash, resulting in an odor-free exhaust system that can be as much as 6 decibels quieter than a conventional exhaust.

For over 30 years Electric Vehicle Concepts has been helping other yacht owners to convert their internal combustion propulsion to battery powered electric propulsion systems.

Horsepower and torque ratings are much different between the ICE and electric motors. Electric motors have superior torque over the gas or diesel engines at low speeds. The lowest speed the Internal combustion engines is capable of maintaining a rotation idle is at 700-800 rpm because of the reverse effect of friction and compression. In order to develop enough torque to drive the boat forward the rpm must be 1500-2000 rpm. From then on the torque output increases with rpm up to 5500 rpm.

The electric motor has an idle speed of 0 rpm and develops maximum torque at 1 revolution, which is unique to electrical motors. Another advantage of the electric system is having instant power. There is no need to wait for the engine to warm up. Just turn on and go. There is no need for a gearbox. One can go from full power forward to full reverse in an instant for a very abrupt emergency stop. The battery powered electric propulsion system is virtually maintenance free since there are very few moving parts in comparison to the Internal combustion engines that are very complicated machines.

The fuels for the ICE are flammable and poisonous. Usually fuel injection systems run at very high pressures especially to pump diesel. Water and foreign elements clog up fuel lines and the very sensitive fuel injection systems. The fuel tanks build up condensation and create rust. The water does not mix with the fuel and will not compress in the fuel injection system. The fuel in the tanks and oil in the engine and gearbox begin to go bad from not being used.

Electric propulsion systems get their energy from fuel cells usually in the form of storage batteries. Most fuel cells can stand for years with no change or loss of power. The lead acid battery has been around for more than a hundred years and has made great improvements in the last 30 years. The ONLY periodical maintenance to electric propulsion system is replenishing the water level in your batteries. There are watering systems available to handle this maintenance. Battery technology continues to advance and we have maintenance free and gel filled batteries.

For the past ten years Chevron Texaco and General Motors have controlled the patents for the nickel hydride battery technology. This was the top technology of its time although we could not use it. We now have the lithium technology that the Chinese are producing.

The high compression ICE is very noisy and creates a good deal of vibration. The ICE creates its energy by burning the fuel to create heat and poisonous carbon monoxide gasses. An average of 20 to 30% of the fuel is burned in the engine and rest of the fuel goes out the exhaust into the water.

With over 100 parts moving metal to metal adds a great deal of heat from the friction and a short life span. Your cooling system must control the temperature from becoming to high and melting the aluminum parts. Sucking the water through a HOLE in the bottom of your boat is the most common practice. One of the most important maintenance for ocean going yachts is keeping the water inlets and screens from getting clogged, usually from barnacles growing on them.

Very little hot air is created by the electric motor under power. The rotating armature (electric motor) is balanced on roller bearings so there is little friction or wear on moving parts. So whether you are motoring or regenerating there is no noise or vibration, absolute quiet! The electric motors today are designed to run 24/7 maintenance free for years.

The electric propulsion system and batteries takes up less space than the ICE propulsion systems; fuel tanks, transmission, exhaust system and the cooling water intake. Since the electric motor turns in both directions you have no need for a transmission or the maintenance of a gear reduction unit. The electric motor has maximum torque from 1 revolution per minute and up.

Comparing the whole weight of electric propulsion to the diesel systems, including all batteries, generators and fuel has the electric system coming out either heavier, lighter or the same, depending on the size of fuel tanks and fuel load. The cost of the electric system, including installation is equivalent to the diesel one.

Boat Vector Thrust Control by Movable Duct Water Outlets

Propellers are more efficient in the comparison on the conventional jet propulsion. But props more subject to damage, as is the sterndrive, itself, and the underwater running gear. These applications are also more ejegy efficient (on fuel, as whell) and with the ability to easily change gears and props, it is possible to change many charaterists involved in ride, application, and speed easily, but not necessarily inexpensively.

New invented propeller jet propulsion simultaneously increases propulsion efficiency and keep prop from damages by curved duct/diffuser draft pipe which is behind the boat hull/hulls (not under hull). It is gear free propulsion (direct drive) by electric drive. Electric motors powered by on board battery charged by on board solar PV modules, even augmented by mirror reflectors.

Curved pipe with a fixed diffuser water outlet of a propeller on an inclined axis Cylindrical  duct with a movable nozzle of a propeller on an inclined axis Cylindrical  duct with a movable diffuser water outletof a propeller on an inclined axis

The core of innovation is a curved duct/diffuser draft pipe of every propeller. Usually are using several ducted propellers each powered by separate engine/electric motor.

For increasing the boat maneuver ability and reduce energy losses each duct/diffuser draft pipe turns independently by common computer control. In a turning maneuver the common computer commands the drives on the inside of the turn to move through a greater angle than that of the outboard drives.

The method of calculation of right geometry and how to construct the common steering system is patented, as well.

Overall result is a significantly tighter turning radius and low energy loses by reducing slipping/drifting by turn.

On other significant innovation is the different thrust vectors and load characteristics of the each propulsion. The thrust vectors are changing by movable end part of the propeller duct/pipe. It at least two possibilities:

The thrust vector is changeable by both diffuser and nozzle water outlet in depend on the duct form.

Electric Vehicle Concepts electric propulsion systems for motor yachts that will run 24/7 will require an on board charging system. Most all power and sailing yachts come equipped with onboard generators more than capable of recharging your propulsion system battery storage for constant running. In most cases smaller gas or diesel units are sufficient.

Thanks to new invented self charging battery system, on board batteries is charging by hydrokinetic function of water propulsion device.

Electric paddle JET propulsion wheel boats do not require messy fuel or complicated maintenance.
Thanks to the new
ROTOJET  design of each paddle blade a jet stream is formed behind the blade and a jet rotational force increase paddle efficiency by rotation as boat propulsion device. Our Electric paddle boats already have the motor/generator built-in wheel hubs.
Since electric paddle boats are battery powered they are non-polluting and quiet. Solar PV modules on the boat roof are required for on boat battery charging. A paddle wheels power barge with battery and super capacitors is a part of a smart power grid as well.

The advantages of an electric powered boat are many. An electric boat is quiet, environmentally sound, it encourages conversation and provides a smooth relaxing environment. In most cases the slap of the water against the hull is the prevalent sound. The absence of other appreciable sound is surprising to most people. Sailors especially appreciate the quiet motion of the electric motor propelled boat. Electric boats are also less expensive to operate and maintain in many cases.

As gas and diesel prices continue to rise and there is a greater appreciation for green living, I see exciting times ahead for electric boating.

The rental and ride opportunities have increased dramatically as has the range of boats available on the market. The market choices were once confined to essentially an expensive launch or or small fishing boat with a trolling motor. The choices now include many lower cost options, a great choice of hull type and some very large boats as well. Several large sailing catamarans are now available with auxiliary electric drive including hybrid drives. Large catamarans are especially good regeneration candidates due to their higher speed potential. There has been a rapid rise in the number of solar assisted electric boats available as stock models and as one off boats (mostly in Europe and Australia). This site will introduce you to some of the many types of electric boats now available for purchase, rental and boat rides.

Behind all of this market activity has been a great deal of technological change. Larger permanent magnet brushless motors and their sophisticated controllers have entered the electric boat market and have already boosted e boat performance dramatically in terms of efficiency, simplicity (generally direct drive) and the ability to regenerate electicity (a decided advantage where an electric motor provides auxiliary power for a large sailboat). Some high tech battery types are getting close to the point of making economic sense. Nickle metal hydride batteries have already been used in some marine applications. The AGM (absorbed glass mat) type of lead acid battery is becomming very popular with electric boaters. Fully engineered hybrid systems are now available for small boats and this area is expected to expand. Solar power has proven itself as a charging source and range extender in many commercial and private boats.
